Summary

From Stonewall and Lambda Award-winning author Kacen Callender comes a revelatory YA novel about a transgender teen grappling with identity and self-discovery while falling in love for the first time。

Felix Love has never been in love—and, yes, he’s painfully aware of the irony。 He desperately wants to know what it’s like and why it seems so easy for everyone but him to find someone。 What’s worse is that, even though he is proud of his identity, Felix also secretly fears that he’s one marginalization too many—Black, queer, and transgender—to ever get his own happily-ever-after。

When an anonymous student begins sending him transphobic messages—after publicly posting Felix’s deadname alongside images of him before he transitioned—Felix comes up with a plan for revenge。 What he didn’t count on: his catfish scenario landing him in a quasi–love triangle。。。。

But as he navigates his complicated feelings, Felix begins a journey of questioning and self-discovery that helps redefine his most important relationship: how he feels about himself。

Felix Ever After is an honest and layered story about identity, falling in love, and recognizing the love you deserve。

This was a book club pick and represented some of my least favourite genres of all : romance - young adult romance - young adult romance set in a school with all the friendship drama that usually entails。 And admittedly, it did take me a while to get into it, but not only is this an extremely readable piece of fiction with a tense whodunnit to focus the mind through the do-I-like-him-does-he-like-me angst, it shows this fascinating world。 Set in an elite art-centric high school in Brooklyn (Feli This was a book club pick and represented some of my least favourite genres of all : romance - young adult romance - young adult romance set in a school with all the friendship drama that usually entails。 And admittedly, it did take me a while to get into it, but not only is this an extremely readable piece of fiction with a tense whodunnit to focus the mind through the do-I-like-him-does-he-like-me angst, it shows this fascinating world。 Set in an elite art-centric high school in Brooklyn (Felix can't afford Brooklyn, he and his dad live in Harlem) the central cast is a group of mostly queer young sophisticates。 All the familiar anxiety, sense of self-doubt, depression and elation and relationships which feel like the only things worth living for are there, but what is missing from my memories of 1980/90s schoolyards is the homophobia。 It's no small thing - these kids date multi-genders, debate labels and attend Pride。 They know they exist in a bubble, surrounded by a queer community, but they still treat this as normal。 It's kinda exhilarating, especially as Callender never turns her characters into talking heads - they feel very much like kids, with kid issues and perspectives。 It's also no paradise - the central plot is uncovering a crime motivated by hate and racism is palpable in Felix's life。 But it is a sign that things can change dramatically in a few decades, and maybe have a generation coming through who see things differently。On a more straightforward front, this book is very well written。 Felix has a lot going on in his life - trying to get into Ivy League, work out what kind of artist he is, abandonment issues, trying to work his gender identity out, working out who doxxed him, and a best friend relationship that dominates everything。 These multifaceted strands of his life mean the book is varied, and they tie together in a pressure cooker of adolescence in a way I'm sure teenagers will respond to。 Slight spoiler alert - Felix's journey is very much one towards learning not to focus on what he can't control, and not to obsess about things and people he can't get。 This might be good for a teenager in a similar situation。 Felix does find love - it is after all a romance - but the biggest growth here is learning that life can go on even if you don't reach every goal。 。。。more

Sometimes it feels that authors who happen to have a marginalized identity, writing in and around that marginalization, are held to the "speaks for everyone in the group" standard to a high degree (I read the one-star reviews)。 I can't speak to the accuracy of the representation other than the author's identity matches a number of the layers of the main character's identity。 And in many ways, this is just a completely standard teenage coming-of-age book。 There's friendship, questioning one's wor Sometimes it feels that authors who happen to have a marginalized identity, writing in and around that marginalization, are held to the "speaks for everyone in the group" standard to a high degree (I read the one-star reviews)。 I can't speak to the accuracy of the representation other than the author's identity matches a number of the layers of the main character's identity。 And in many ways, this is just a completely standard teenage coming-of-age book。 There's friendship, questioning one's worth, bullying, romance, heartbreak, school, and college on the horizon。 The mechanics of this are very familiar。 But each mundane, angsty moment is seen through the eyes of Felix, a transgender boy, and therefore there are added layers。So friendships are complicated by romance, but also complicated by bad parental reactions to coming out and self-doubt over one's gender identity。 Felix is from a less-well-off family, but also one missing a parent: his mother abandoned him several years ago。 Relationships with parents are suitably tense in many normal ways, but complicated by a parent's difficulties in understanding their transgender child。 Felix himself is fortunate to have a parent supporting him, even if that parent is uncertain and fumbling。 Felix's best friend defends him intensely from even a hint of transphobia。 But Felix, despite having transitioned, is having doubts。 Doubts of his worthiness of love, but also further doubts as to his identity。 If he doesn't feel like a girl, but also doesn't always feel like a boy, what exactly is he? Does he even need a label? And what makes him worthy of love if his mother abandoned him and his father cannot fully embrace who he is? Compounding the self-doubt is a deeply hurtful incident at school that outs his pre-transition appearance, followed by incredibly harmful cyberbullying。 There are some great conversations about who "belongs" in the LGBTQ+ crowd, how privilege manifests even next to marginalization, a nice moment highlighting consent, and a many moments of apologies。 There's some good stuff on misunderstanding, the dangers of jumping to conclusions, and the potentially (but not guaranteed) healing power of forgiveness。(view spoiler)[In the end, Felix comes to understand himself more, appreciate himself more, and love himself。 I am glad he found love from outside sources as well, but I was not a wild fan of the Ezra romantic relationship。 It was too rom-com for me, and I felt the rest of the book tried to resist most of the regular cliches。 On a separate note, the cyberbullying was awful -- it was all too easy to see why the suicide rate for transgender people is so high。 (hide spoiler)] So there were some bits I wasn't a huge fan of, but overall I can't help but cheer at a story that shows a transgender teen boy experiencing the world。 Notes: transphobia, homophobia, teen drinking and drug use 。。。more

This is the first trans book that I have read and I definitely enjoyed it。 I fell in love with all the characters and how each of their story unfolds before my very eyes。 As self-discovery is happening to each and every one of them that is what is also happening with me。 Their thoughts are my thoughts, their feelings are my feelings。 The roller coaster of emotions is so endearing that you can't help but be with them every moment everyday。 Looking forward to reading more trans or gender books in This is the first trans book that I have read and I definitely enjoyed it。 I fell in love with all the characters and how each of their story unfolds before my very eyes。 As self-discovery is happening to each and every one of them that is what is also happening with me。 Their thoughts are my thoughts, their feelings are my feelings。 The roller coaster of emotions is so endearing that you can't help but be with them every moment everyday。 Looking forward to reading more trans or gender books in the future。 。。。more

This book is beautiful。 I love how accurate it is in terms of teenage struggles。 I love Felix learning to love himself before loving others。 I love how amazingly the author was able to portray first love。 Everything about this book was so spot-on。 (view spoiler)[Honestly, I thought Felix and Declan were gonna end up together, so at first, I was a bit disappointed that they didn't (because of my love of the enemies-to-lovers trope)。 But the more I think about it, the more it feels like Ezra and F This book is beautiful。 I love how accurate it is in terms of teenage struggles。 I love Felix learning to love himself before loving others。 I love how amazingly the author was able to portray first love。 Everything about this book was so spot-on。 (view spoiler)[Honestly, I thought Felix and Declan were gonna end up together, so at first, I was a bit disappointed that they didn't (because of my love of the enemies-to-lovers trope)。 But the more I think about it, the more it feels like Ezra and Felix are a perfect fit for each other。 They're such adorable and wholesome friends, and an even more adorable and wholesome couple。 (hide spoiler)]Overall, this is a wonderful book that perfectly captures the hardships of relationships, defining your identity, and accepting yourself as being worthy of love。Would definitely recommend this book to everyone! 。。。more

This book was beyond amazing! I loved each and every part of it! There were a few things that annoyed me though。 For example some characters said “effing” while those same characters said the actual F word。 That really annoys me when writers do that。 There were also a few sentence arrangements that bothered me and it made me have to read it through twice to understand it。 But other than that, this is a beautifully written book and I highly recommend it, especially those who are questioning their This book was beyond amazing! This was a sweet little love (and self love) story, and I think it will get a lot of traction in my classroom library。 I enjoyed the art school setting and the messy teenage friendships。 I do wish there had been a *little* more focus on the main character as an artist, because there was a lot of the “oh wow, Felix is a great artist!” takes, but not a lot of insight into his actual process as an artist or passion for his art。 The plot was pretty predictable, but the emotions felt very real。 Overa This was a sweet little love (and self love) story, and I think it will get a lot of traction in my classroom library。 I enjoyed the art school setting and the messy teenage friendships。 I do wish there had been a *little* more focus on the main character as an artist, because there was a lot of the “oh wow, Felix is a great artist!” takes, but not a lot of insight into his actual process as an artist or passion for his art。 The plot was pretty predictable, but the emotions felt very real。 Overall, I liked this considerably better than the author’s earlier novel (This is Kind of an Epic Love Story), and I now look forward to reading more of their work in the future。 。。。more

Wow, this story was absolutely beyond amazing。 I know I keep making this joke, but I actually think it’s time that I make a tag for queer books that made me sob。 Because yes this absolutely did, in some of the best ways possible。 I truly connected with Felix’s struggle to figure out his gender identify as I’ve been going through that mental back and forth myself。 Also, I just love how queer everyone at their school is。 While not everyone understands cross-sectionalism (and might not be great peo Wow, this story was absolutely beyond amazing。 I know I keep making this joke, but I actually think it’s time that I make a tag for queer books that made me sob。 Because yes this absolutely did, in some of the best ways possible。 I truly connected with Felix’s struggle to figure out his gender identify as I’ve been going through that mental back and forth myself。 Also, I just love how queer everyone at their school is。 While not everyone understands cross-sectionalism (and might not be great people), its so nice to see Felix’s core, trusting group to be so supportive。 It’s truly an amazing, authentic story that I think all young people should read。 。。。more

This book gives amazing representation of the LGBTQIA+ community。 It shows what it is like to question who you are。 Honestly is helping me find my path of my identity。 Shows being bullied and dealing with it and even parent problems。 Just over all this book gives me joy。

Felix Ever After was every bit the feel-good, optimistic story I expected it to be and I wish I had read it when I was younger。It follows the complicated life of seventeen-year-old Felix Love。 Having to face the daily challenges of being black, queer and transgender means that Felix has a guarded personality, hinging on fear。 He believes that he is unlovable and struggles to socialize with others。This is only made worse when an anonymous person who also attends his summer school program begins m Felix Ever After was every bit the feel-good, optimistic story I expected it to be and I wish I had read it when I was younger。It follows the complicated life of seventeen-year-old Felix Love。 Having to face the daily challenges of being black, queer and transgender means that Felix has a guarded personality, hinging on fear。 He believes that he is unlovable and struggles to socialize with others。This is only made worse when an anonymous person who also attends his summer school program begins making transphobic taunts over social media and even an outright attack。 As well as this, Felix also grapples with questions surrounding defining his identity and finding true love。Felix Ever After felt like a very familiar young adult coming out story。 It follows a similar methodology common to most books of the genre, whereby the hero is presented with a conflict and in trying to overcome it, he severs important friendships only to realise that true love was there all along。 But judging this book independent of all the clichés, it was a deeply affecting and sensitive read。 It speaks to mainly queer people of colour whose experience with feelings of fear, dysphoria, imposter syndrome and self-deprecation often leave them more vulnerable than most。 The stripped back narrative made this book a quick and easy read as most of the plot was revealed through the dialogue and therefore didn't require much fleshing out。 I thought this style of storytelling was executed well, though events became more and more predictable as we got closer to the end。 Overall, I enjoyed reading Felix Ever After and would definitely recommend it。 It was an uplifting own voices novel with an equally optimistic message。 。。。more
